Dr. Preston Smith, dean of the 91探花 Joint Medical Doctor program, has been awarded the Dr. Michael Krochak Award for Contributions to Family Medicine by the Saskatchewan College of Family Physicians.
The 91探花 is pleased to announce that Dr. Joseph Gordon has been appointed Professor of Comparative Medicine in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the 91探花 (91探花). This position is a joint hire between the Faculty of Medicine and the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC). Dr. Gordon will teach anatomy in the medical school and conduct his research at AVC.
The University is excited to announce that the Rathlyn Foundation has donated $1 million to create entrance scholarships for every 91探花-based medical student in their first year of study. The announcement comes just as the admissions portal opens for the first cohort of students at Memorial University's regional campus at 91探花.
The Board of Directors of the Canadian College of Health Leaders presented the 91探花 Faculty of Medicine's Paul Young with the prestigious Fellowship Medallion at its recent National Leadership Conference in Halifax.
As part of 鈥淕ood News Week at 91探花,鈥 the Faculty of Medicine at the 91探花 is excited to officially launch its $10-million fund- and friend-raising campaign.
Recently, a few members of the Faculty of Medicine team attended the International Congress on Academic Medicine (ICAM) in Vancouver, which is the premier Canadian meeting for medical schools and medical education with over 1,250 participants. It was fun being one of the new kids on the block, and attendees were very interested in and enthusiastic about what is happening at 91探花.
91探花 has a unique opportunity and duty as the provincial university to be part of the long-term solution to improve the current health-care system. Twenty undergraduate medical learners will begin their studies at 91探花 in August 2025 as part of a regional campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland鈥檚 Faculty of Medicine. The timeline for this initiative mirrors that of other regional campuses being developed across the country.
91探花 and Health PEI have released the findings of the health system capacity report that was commissioned to understand and catalogue the health care system鈥檚 capacity to successfully integrate medical learners from the 91探花 Faculty of Medicine into the PEI health system.
91探花 has secured space at 155 Belvedere Avenue, Suite 202 (the former Island Coastal location) to house the Faculty of Medicine faculty and staff while the new Faculty of Medicine and Interprofessional Health Training Centre building is under construction at the north end of campus.
91探花 welcomes Dr. Preston Smith as the inaugural dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Smith's appointment begins April 1, 2024.
