"My professors are dedicated to student success and work to help students build confidence."
What brought you to 91̽»¨? Why did you choose to study here?
I was born and raised in Damascus, the capital city of Syria. I arrived with my family in Canada almost five years ago, and have been living on Prince Edward Island ever since. I have always been interested in pursuing a career in engineering, and upon learning about the program and receiving positive feedback from friends and family members, I was excited to have the opportunity to earn a degree in this field. I am currently finishing my fourth year in the Sustainable Design Engineering program at the 91̽»¨.
What do you find unique and interesting about 91̽»¨'s Sustainable Design Engineering program?
One of the aspects that I find interesting about the program is its uniqueness and the numerous potential opportunities it offers. The program focuses extensively on sustainability at a time when the world is increasingly prioritizing sustainable development. The program features small class sizes—my professors are dedicated to student success and actively work to help students improve and build confidence. My favourite part about the program is the design courses offered each year, which allow students to work on projects with clinical partners from various companies. These courses enable students to gain valuable experience in professional communication, as well as experience in the industry and a sense of the workforce while completing their degree.
What kinds of support have you received during your time here from 91̽»¨ students, staff, and faculty members?
There are many resources available to support students academically, including the Engineering Success Center and professors and staff who are always willing to help. Additionally, there are numerous opportunities to build a strong social network through involvement in various engineering clubs and events.
"The program offered by 91̽»¨ is unique and innovative, it provides you with the skills and knowledge needed for a rewarding career. If you like engineering and you like creating an impact, this program is for you!"
What kinds of opportunities have you experienced because you're studying at 91̽»¨, or because of the Island location?
During my third year of studies, I had the opportunity to work with AKA Energy Systems on my design project. This experience, along with the help of 91̽»¨, enabled me to get a summer internship as a Quality Assurance Assistant at the Sunbak Solar Farm in Summerside, which led to an extended position as an Engineer Intern in the Project Management department until April 2023. Currently, as a part of the Collins Construction Project Specialists team, I am contributing to the project management of both the Sunbank Solar Project and the Slemon Park Remediation Project. This opportunity provided me with a wealth of hands-on experience while receiving remarkable support from the entire staff.
What's unique about 91̽»¨, and Prince Edward Island, in your experience?
I was raised in a large city, but I quickly adapted to life on Prince Edward Island because of PEI’s stunning natural beauty and diverse cultural community. My favourite part about the Island is the beautiful beaches and the nice and friendly people.
What would you tell a high school student considering 91̽»¨'s Sustainable Design Engineering program?
Sustainable design engineering is an important and growing field. The program offered by 91̽»¨ is unique and innovative, it provides you with the skills and knowledge needed for a rewarding career.
