A major concern of horse owners, colic is a common disorder of the equine digestive system, resulting in abdominal discomfort and often severe pain. It is likely that most horses will have an episode at some time in their life.
On Tuesday, November 19, 7:00鈥8:30 pm, Dr. Kathleen MacMillan, Equine Ambulatory Service, Atlantic Veterinary College, will share her knowledge about this painful and potentially deadly condition in horses. She will present information about the different types of colic, recognition of symptoms, diagnosis and treatment, and reduction of risk of the illness. The event will take place in AVC Lecture Theatre A.
Everyone is welcome. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. Donations to the AVC Friends and Family gratefully accepted. For information, contact (902) 566-0589 or avc.upei.ca.
Do you know a veterinarian who has gone beyond the call of duty in his or her work? The Atlantic Veterinary College is accepting nominations of veterinarians for its 2013 Atlantic Award of Excellence in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Care. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, October 30, at 4 pm AST. Visit avc.upei.ca/awards for more information and the nomination form.
On Friday, October 25 from 5:30鈥7:00 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre A, a continuation of the Difficult Dialogues series that was started last year at 91探花 will be taking place again this year. The topic is transgendered persons and their life experiences. During this event, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about what transgendered people have to go through on a daily basis. The event is an interactive event in the sense that those in attendance will have several opportunities to ask questions that they may have about the material presented, as well as ask about the experiences some of the presenters have had. Panelists will also be available following the event for further discussions with attendees.
All are welcome to attend!

The Quebec Court of Appeal is expected to release a ruling tomorrow in a case about the future of the Senate of Canada. The government of Quebec has challenged the federal government's attempt to make what some have called an end-run around the Constitution by reforming the senate through ordinary legislation. The court's ruling will take into account the expert testimony of several witnesses, including Dr. Don Desserud, professor of political science at 91探花.
Watch an interview about the case with Dr. Desserud at the 91探花 Research Blog:
Dear members of the campus community,
On behalf of the 91探花, I would like to inform the campus community that Dr. Ron MacDonald, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education, has been appointed interim Dean of Education, effective November 1, 2013. Dr. Miles Turnbull, outgoing dean, recently announced he had accepted the position of Vice-Principal Academic at Bishop鈥檚 University, beginning in January 2014.
Ron MacDonald earned his PhD degree from the University of South Australia. Before teaching at Cape Breton University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and 91探花, Dr. MacDonald was a junior and senior high school science teacher in Nova Scotia and Ontario. He was also an information technology integration specialist and professional development facilitator.
Dr. MacDonald joined the 91探花 Faculty of Education in September 2005 and was appointed Assistant Professor in 2006, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, in particular science methods, and conducting research in the intersections between teacher attitudes toward Information Communication Technology (ICT), leadership, and professional development for ICT integration.
The search process for a new dean will start in the near future.
Dr. Christian Lacroix
Interim Vice-President Academic
