The Master of Nursing (MN) program is founded upon the guiding principles of primary health care and designed to prepare nurses for advanced nursing practice through the integration of theory, research, and practice. Graduates will incorporate evidence-based practice, leadership, advanced clinical decision-making, critical thinking, and collaboration in a variety of roles and settings.
The MN program has two streams: the Thesis stream and the Nurse Practitioner stream. The Master's program is built on the existing strengths of the faculty and the focus of PHC. Graduates from both streams are prepared to function in an advanced practice role in PHC settings. The MN Thesis graduate is prepared to engage in a variety of advanced practice roles including, but not limited to: direct care of individuals, families, communities, or populations; education; administration; and, research.
Note: Intake to the summer 2024 cohort of the Thesis stream program has been suspended.
All applications for the 2024 Summer intake have been withdrawn. Application fees will be returned to applicants via the method of payment used. For more information, please contact the program coordinator Gail Macartney at gmacartney@upei.ca.
The MN Nurse Practitioner graduate will be prepared to manage the health needs of individuals, families, groups, and communities across the lifespan. Graduates of the Nurse Practitioner Stream will be eligible to write 鈥媡he Canadian Nurse Practitioners Examination: Family/All Ages (CNPE: F/AA).
The degree designated upon successful completion of either stream is a Master of Nursing (MN).

A student who has not yet applied to the MN program or who has not been formally accepted, may take up to two masters level courses as a special student. This does not apply to Nurse Practitioner courses or Advanced Nursing Practice in the thesis stream. Graduate courses taken by special students may subsequently be considered for credit towards a MN degree with the approval of the MN Graduate Studies Committee.
A student who wishes to register as a special student should contact the MN Coordinator of Graduate Studies
