The Mawi鈥檕mi Indigenous Student Centre is seeking applicants for a Student Assistant Position. The Mawi鈥檕mi Indigenous Student Centre offers services and supports to First Nations, Metis, and Inuit students attending 91探花 as well as cultural information and resources to the whole University community.

The successful candidate will lead the programming and support other Mawi鈥檕mi Centre staff and students and will work with the Elder(s) in Residence and other Student Affairs staff to provide supports and services to 91探花 Indigenous Students. This position will report to the Mawi鈥檕mi Coordinator and the Manager of Student Culture and Community Standards in the Department of Student Affairs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide a welcoming environment for Indigenous students visiting the Mawi鈥檕mi Centre 
  • Support with scheduling, planning and delivering social and cultural events throughout the year including the Mi鈥檏maq History month
  • Aid the Elder(s) in Residence as needed
  • Monitor the Mawi鈥檕mi Centre email and maintain regular communication with Indigenous Students via email and social media
  • Provide peer mentorship and refer students to other campus and community support services as needed
  • Presentations/outreach into the public school system and local communities with the guidance of the Centre鈥檚 coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Self-motivated 91探花 student, with the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Excellent organization, time management and communication skills
  • Previous experience working with students and youth considered an asset
  • Event planning experience is an asset
  • Indigenous cultural competency is required
  • Lived experience with indigenous communities is an asset
  • Knowledge of Mi鈥檘maq culture is an asset

Priority will be given to 91探花 students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
