Red Cross on the Home Front

Event Date:
Monday, November 3, 2014, 7:00 pm
Location:
Health Sciences Building
Room:
301 (dining room)
Just in time for Remembrance Day in the centenary year of the outbreak of the First World War, two historians offer a public talk exploring the humanitarian war work of civilians on the home front. 100 years ago, the Australian Red Cross did not exist and the Canadian Red Cross was small and little-known. Both rose to prominence as a result of the war, serving as channels for ordinary citizens' desire to serve their country and to save the lives of sick and wounded servicemen. Dr. Ian Willis (University of Wollongong, Australia) will discuss Red Cross work in the Camden district of New South Wales, and Dr. Sarah Glassford (91探花) will discuss Islanders' work for the Canadian Red Cross. All are welcome to attend.
